For a coffee bean to become caffeine-free, we use an extremely gentle, certified process with natural spring carbon dioxide (CO₂) for our Kirmse varieties. The caffeine is gently washed out of the unroasted green beans under high pressure, while the precious coffee oils and flavour carriers remain completely in the bean. The caffeine content of coffee thus drops to below 0.1%. So, if you're looking for a first-class caffeine-free coffee for the late evening, our decaffeinated Zwiesler Goldböhnchen tastes like the familiar original but allows you to fall asleep completely relaxed.
Are there coffee varieties that are naturally low in caffeine or caffeine-free?
Yes, there are! Our absolute record holder among un-decaffeinated beans is the Australia Skybury: because of the lack of evolutionary insect pressure in its homeland, it naturally has a minimal caffeine content in coffee of just about 0.6%.
If, on the other hand, you're looking for an alternative that is 100% caffeine-free coffee by nature, we recommend our regional LuKa Lupine Coffee from Bavaria. Since sweet lupine is botanically unrelated to the coffee bush, it provides caffeine-free coffee beans of a very different kind – guaranteed free of coffee caffeine, but thanks to our artisanal drum roasting, wonderfully full-flavoured with delicate notes of chocolate and malt.
