Is decaffeinated coffee healthy or unhealthy?

Dichloromethane is inexpensive and therefore the most commonly used method. After using dichloromethane, the coffee beans are rinsed, which must be done very thoroughly, as the agent is also considered carcinogenic. Another method of production is extraction with carbonic acid, a good alternative for producing decaffeinated coffee in a healthy way that preserves its flavour.

Decaffeinated with Carbonic Acid

Decaffeinating coffee with carbonic acid is the healthiest technique and, at the same time, the method that best preserves the coffee's flavour. This is the process that Kirmse coffee roastery relies on. Selected coffee beans, such as Zwieseler Goldböhnchen and Columbia coffee, are decaffeinated externally using the carbonic acid process. The procedure is very complex and equally costly. However, the coffee beans retain all their positive properties; only the caffeine is extracted. A certain residual amount of caffeine remains in the coffee beans, which is why it cannot be described as caffeine-free. The extracted caffeine from the coffee bean has numerous buyers, such as the beverage industry. Caffeine is also an important ingredient in many medicines and cosmetics.

Health and Side Effects

For most coffee lovers, it's incomprehensible why people drink decaffeinated coffee. After all, it's the morning kick of caffeine that truly opens our eyes and awakens our spirits. Today, caffeine is considered anything but unhealthy. Enjoyed in the right amounts, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and promotes concentration. With the average 162 litres of coffee per year consumed by Germans, which corresponds to approximately 1000 cups annually, or 3 cups daily of 150ml coffee, it's unlikely that caffeine has a significant impact on health. Regular consumption of caffeinated coffee demonstrably shows adaptation to caffeine. However, everyone tolerates caffeine differently. Some people react to caffeine with sleep disturbances and should probably avoid caffeinated coffee for several hours before bedtime.

Recent studies show that caffeine does not have a major impact on blood pressure. According to the German Heart Foundation, blood pressure rises by 10 to 20 mmHg for a maximum of 30 minutes. Only individuals with very high blood pressure readings should exercise some caution with excessive coffee consumption.

Caffeine Content of Different Coffee Varieties

The caffeine content in the different coffee varieties naturally also plays a significant role if you feel that you don't tolerate the caffeine in coffee well and therefore drink decaffeinated coffee. Robusta coffee has up to 5 times higher 3 caffeine content than most Arabica coffees and can have unpleasant effects if you are sensitive to caffeine.

Is it gentler on the stomach?

Do you drink it because you consider it gentler on the stomach and easier to digest? I, coffee roaster Jens Kirmse, would like to clear up this rumour. When customers or their companions tell me they unfortunately can't tolerate coffee, I ask them to try a coffee from Kirmse Coffee Roastery. What often upsets the stomach and makes coffee indigestible is usually solely due to the roasting process. The industrial roasting of coffee beans takes place in large coffee roasteries in two minutes at up to 800 degrees Celsius. Coffee roasting at Kirmse Coffee Roastery is a multi-stage process at a maximum of 200 degrees Celsius, where the roasting process can take 20 minutes. Bitter substances and negative properties of the coffee bean are slowly broken down, and the coffee beans are gently roasted.
