Coffee of the Year » Colombian Coffee
Fairly traded and **Coffee of the Year** 2008 from Planadas, Colombia, in the Tomila region demonstrates that a former war zone, where the FARC still fought against the state at the end of the 20th century, can transform into a flourishing landscape with thriving trade. The ASOPEP cooperative, under the leadership of Camilo Enciso Suarez, a veterinarian, was founded in 2013 with the mission of cultivating high-quality, environmentally friendly, sustainable coffee. At the same time, the association promotes the personal development of its now 175 members and their families through education with a variety of training courses, such as sustainable coffee cultivation, modern farming techniques, and cupping courses. Fair compensation with extra premiums for the production of an outstanding specialty coffee, which is unique in Colombia, is fundamentally important for ASOPEP and for me, Jens Kirmse, for the appreciative and valuing work of the coffee farmers.
