Coffee Costa Rica Tarrazú - 100% Arabica Coffee
Costa Rica coffee comes from arguably the most famous and best region for coffee from Costa Rica - Tarrazú. The Costa Rica coffee grows on fertile volcanic soil. The tradition-rich Hacienda Salomon, from which the Arabica coffee originates, is situated on volcanic slopes in the untouched nature of the Tres Rios province. The shade-loving Cattura coffee cherry ripens extremely slowly at over 1,600 meters above sea level, nestled amidst the native flora and fauna in pristine wilderness.
The rich coast (Spanish: Costa Rica) boasts a long tradition in coffee cultivation; coffee was already grown in Costa Rica in the 18th century.
In Costa Rica, the cultivation of Robusta coffee is prohibited to protect Arabica coffees. To secure coffee cultivation for the future, the government has enacted strict environmental regulations. Small processing plants in the coffee-growing regions allow coffee farmers to process their own harvests. Furthermore, coffee farmers and small cooperatives can sell their coffee directly to buyers from all over the world, which is still an exception in this day and age. The majority of coffee is still traded on the world's major coffee exchanges, where speculators and intermediaries are the winners. The losers are the coffee farmers, who have no influence whatsoever on the pricing set by global players, no matter how good their coffee may be.
Coffee cultivation in Costa Rica can be described as revolutionary. 50,000 coffee producers, 90% of whom are small farmers, focus on producing quality coffee. 55,000 families rely on coffee cultivation as their livelihood.
Coffee from Costa Rica - Highland Coffee from Hacienda Salomon
Costa Rica coffee is a highland coffee, thriving at altitudes of at least 1,600m.
The Arabica coffee bears the SHB quality predicate. SHB stands for Strictly Hard Bean - the higher the coffee is cultivated, the slower the coffee cherries ripen, increasing their density and size.
This Arabica coffee comes exclusively from Hacienda Salomon, an estate situated on the nutrient-rich volcanic slopes of an untouched valley in the Tres Rios region. The eruptions of the Irazú volcano, the last one dated 1963, combined with the optimal balance of rain and humidity, the Costa Rican sun, and the mild oceanic climate, allow this particularly excellent coffee to ripen.
The high quality and unique taste of Costa Rica coffee are partly attributable to the high fertility and composition of the soils.
Nestled in natural mixed cultivation, the cultivation of Costa Rica coffee on Hacienda Salomon can forego pesticides and other chemicals, as the coffee plants are far less susceptible than those grown in monoculture.
Due to its location on steep slopes in extensive forests, machine cultivation is ruled out and undesirable. The coffee cherries are only harvested and sorted by hand when ripe.
Costa Rica Coffee - Coffee, Fair Trade & Directly Traded
Costa Rica coffee is a coffee that is Fair Trade and directly traded. The government of Costa Rica has created the foundation through strict environmental regulations for coffee cultivation:
In Costa Rica, only Arabica coffee may be cultivated, thus protecting Arabica coffee varieties. Awareness has grown that the exploitation of nature destroys the livelihood of local people, but also the good product for the consumer. Since 1949, Costa Rica has arguably the most stable democracy in the region and boasts a good education and healthcare system, as well as well-conceived environmental protection.
In addition to cultivating coffee of the highest quality, Costa Rica also focuses on eco-tourism, well aware of its rich flora and fauna.
The coffee is directly traded, also promoted by the Costa Rican government. The coffee product, from cultivation and care to harvesting, processing, and distribution, is in the hands of the coffee farmers or small cooperatives, who can actively shape the price for their coffee. The green coffee is traded up to 40% higher than green coffee traded on the world's major coffee exchanges. Speculators and traders are left empty-handed. Fair remuneration for coffee farmers is thus possible. The margin that others normally pocket stays with the producer themselves and significantly contributes to adequate wages and livelihood, as well as investment in a good end product – an incredibly good coffee. Costa Rica coffee can be described as Fair Trade coffee.
